Our latest obsession leaves us wondering…why didn’t we think of that? Recently we were introduced to The Little Green Pouch. Two things: 1) this product is incredible and smart and 2) so are the ladies who made the idea a reality. What can we say, we love women in business.
One thing is certain when it comes to kids and nutrition: in order to get them to eat the good stuff, the way it’s offered is just as important as the taste itself. It’s all about delivery and texture and if it’s fun. As we talk about in the upcoming Kids Rule – proper nutrition is paramount for kids health. The most important step we can take is to get more of the good vitamins and minerals in, namely from veggies, and the easiest way to do that? Blend them up! But what if they won’t have anything to do with a smoothie or a bowl of soup…well, in comes the a reusable pouch that makes the whole thing a bit more fun, financially sound and good for the earth. Not a bad idea, right? Check out more about Little Green Pouch and co-founders Maggie and Melissa below; and don’t miss the giveaway happening at the bottom of the page!
How did the two of you meet?
Melissa: Maggie and I have known each other since childhood. Maggie and my sister have been friends since middle school, so she has always been a presence in my life and I have looked up to her ever since –and still do.
What makes you such a dynamic duo?
Maggie: Our strengths are so complimentary. Melissa is a designer, I am a lawyer. Clearly, we have different skill sets. Where one of us falls short, the other is a star. We also understand each other and both value hard work. I like to say that together we are are superwomen and can do anything. The fact that we really like each other doesn’t hurt, either.
What inspired you to create Little Green Pouch? How was Little Green Pouch born?
As moms, we quickly fell in love with food pouches. But we didn’t love the expense, limited variety of foods and having to throw the single-use packages in the trash. We knew the world needed a “reusable” food pouch. We wanted a product that wasn’t just practical, but that was also beautiful. Something we’d be proud to whip out at the playground, park or store. And even something we’d use ourselves. Since the very beginning, we’ve been working with moms and dads and listening to their needs and the problems we could solve with Little Green Pouch. The Little Green Pouch has made our lives easier, and we think it can do the same for all parents.
What inspires you?
Maggie: Honestly? Competition.
Melissa: It might be because I have a design background, but I see inspiration in everything. I think that is why I love Pinterest so much – I am able to save visuals of all the different things that inspire me.
Any advice for others contemplating starting their own business?
Believe in your concept and yourself and take it one day at a time. Starting your own business or creating a new product can be daunting, so just focus on what you can get done today and tackle that. And make sure you listen to your customers and what their needs are. Excellent customer service can go a long way, especially for a new business.
What’s your favorite part about creating Little Green Pouch?
Maggie: Collaborating with my partner, and great friend, Melissa, and watching her work her magic.
Melissa: Getting emails from our customers telling us why they love the pouches. Every time I read an email or Facebook post from a fan I get energized.
What’s the hardest thing you do everyday?
Maggie: Waking up. I hate waking up. Everything else is a relative cake walk.
Melissa: Figuring out what to cook for dinner. I actually enjoy the cooking part, but I hate trying to figure out what I should make (even with hundreds of recipes pinned to my Pinterest boards).
Where do you see yourselves in 5 years?
Maggie: A little less swamped, broke and anxious—all made possible by an expanded product line that helps families, athletes and outdoor aficionados save space, time, money and, importantly, the planet.
Melissa: Still running Little Green Pouch with my friend and co-founder. Little Green Pouch will be a household name by then, and we will get to spend our time dreaming up new and innovative products to make people’s lives easier and less wasteful!
