This year has certainly tested our resilience and patience. It has thrown a deadly virus at us that still threatens our community. We held our breaths during a divisive election. And, 2020 has made us all look at our own part in systemic racism and has challenged us to do better. While there were some very tough times during this past year and there is still work to be done, 2020 has also shown us our capacity for hope, compassion, and perseverance.

This year’s Giving Tuesday broke records – Americans donated to charity more than ever, showing that selflessness and compassion is alive and well during these turbulent times. In the spirit of giving this holiday season, we encourage you to donate to causes and organizations that work tirelessly to help those in need. Here are our picks for charities doing great work on the local and national level:

Feeding San Diego

Mission: “Connect every person facing hunger with nutritious meals by maximizing food rescue.”

Feeding San Diego works across San Diego County, providing free and nutritious food for anyone who needs it. The pandemic has led to a 50-percent increase in need for food assistance, so your donations are crucial to helping children, adults, and seniors in need!

Direct Relief

Mission: “Direct Relief is a humanitarian aid organization, active in all 50 states and more than 80 countries, with a mission to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies – without regard to politics, religion, or ability to pay.”

Direct Relief has been ranked one of the top charities in the country and has been extremely effective in providing medical supplies to hospitals and health facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

National Black Food And Justice Alliance

Mission: “National Black Food and Justice Alliance (NBFJA) organizes for black food and land by increasing the visibility of visionary Black leadership, advancing Black people’s struggle for just and sustainable communities, and building power in our food systems and land stewardship.”

This Black-led coalition of organizations brings to light the food injustice in the United States and focuses on Black food sovereignty and supporting Black-led visions for self-determination within our food systems.

Mama’s Kitchen

Mission: Mama’s Kitchen, a community-driven organization, believes that everyone is entitled to the basic necessity of life — nutritious food. Our nutrition services improve the lives of women, men, and children vulnerable to hunger due to HIV, cancer, or other critical illnesses.

This San Diego organization has been providing meals since 1990 and served more than 300,000 meals to those in need during the pandemic alone!

DETOUR

Mission: “DETOUR (Depositing Empowerment Through Outreach & Urban Redevelopment) is a mentoring program for girls of color. Our mission is to increase access to education and employment opportunities for girls through our Focused And Naturally Confident Youth (F.A.N.C.Y.) Leadership programs (Expo, Leadership Academy, and Ambassador Internships.)”

DETOUR was recently recognized as National Philanthropy Day’s Outstanding Organization for Diversity and Inclusion. The organization provides great educational resources and mentoring for girls of color in the San Diego community in order to reach their personal and professional goals!
