Protein Powder Please

  • First off, this P20 program is coming into focus for me. I’m feeling good about the small wins (my daughter got a donut and while it took all the willpower I could muster to not get one too, I resisted). The big wins are that I’m sleeping better (I actually feel rested when I wake up in the morning), and I just generally feel better without the processed food and added sugar.

So here is where I’m struggling a bit. I’ve taken to having some protein powder during the day to stem some of the hunger cravings and keep me from reaching for a snack. I’ve found one that I like that is vanilla, plant-based and clean (it’s either Dr. Axe or SFH brand), but I’m getting tired of it. I’ve tried some of the other flavors and they are chalky or have a weird aftertastes. Can anyone recommend a decent protein powder that’s clean enough for P20 that tastes good?

  • Hi Craig! My favorite protein powder is Vital Proteins Collagen Fuel in Chocolate Coconut. I’ve also heard good things about Naked (if you can tolerate whey), Terrasoul and Sunwarrior. Some other grab-and-go protein options include Chomps grass-fed beef jerky, organic hard boiled eggs, and Justin’s peanut butter or almond butter squeeze packs (unsweetened). Let me know if you need any more ideas!

  • Sorry – not Vital Proteins (although they make a good one, too!). I meant Primal Collagen Fuel in Chocolate Coconut. Let me know what you think!

  • Hi Lisa,
I have tried the collagen based protein powders and found they cause a lot of bloat and stomach upset. Have you had anyone with this experience? I can tolerate whey and will have to try the Naken protein powder. I have not had a lot of luck with the plant based protein powders – often they are chalky.

  • Hi Ann, Glad you are listening to what your body prefers when it comes to protein powder – it’s your best guide! That said, I typically recommend slowly easing into collagen as too much at once can cause bloating for some people. For example, you could try one serving (generally a scoop) per day, either all at once or split into two “doses.” If that feels great, you can always try a scoop in the AM and one PM. The quality/brand is also super important – you want to be sure that any collagen consumed is all pasture-raised cows or wild-caught fish. It sounds like whey protein is working well for you though so feel free to stick with that route unless you’d like to give collagen another try. How are you feeling in general on P20? Cheers to the last week!
