What does nutrition have to do with your sex life? Well, as it turns out, a lot. To state the obvious, we simply don’t feel sexy when we’re bloated or feeling like crap. But there’s also a lot of research linking specific nutrients to a higher libido. Yes, you can boost your libido through food and nutrition! Amazing, right?? Here are the best foods to eat to boost your libido.

Salmon

Salmon is a great source of omega-3’s which help support hormones and improve sperm motility. Other foods high in omega-3’s include mackerel, sardines, flaxseeds, and grass-fed beef. If you’re not eating fish regularly, you can also supplement with a high quality fish oil, krill oil or cod liver oil.

Maca

Maca, a.k.a. nature’s aphrodisiac, has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb. It’s a powerful adaptogen and can help boost energy, balance hormones, ease anxiety, and boost libido. Add 1-2 tsp. to your daily smoothies or oatmeal to reap its benefits!

Oysters

Oysters are a great source of zinc, a mineral that’s particularly important for male reproductive health. Even slight zinc deficiencies can affect sperm quantity and motility. Zinc is also essential for skin health and immunity, both of which can indirectly affect libido (I don’t know about you, but a runny nose and a huge zit don’t necessarily get me in the mood…). Not a fan of oysters? Other foods rich in zinc include grass-fed beef, lamb, pumpkin seeds, and other shellfish. Crimini and shiitake mushrooms, asparagus, and spinach are also good sources.

Eggs

Eggs are a good source of vitamin D, a pre-hormone that plays a role in energy and mood. They’re also a great source of a number of B vitamins which have been shown to increase energy, boost libido, and balance hormones.

Beets

Beets are an excellent source of dietary nitrates which are turned into nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide improves blood flow and circulation, leading to a stronger erection. Other foods rich in dietary nitrates include leafy greens and celery. Dark chocolate, garlic, nuts and seeds, and citrus fruits can also *ahem* enhance levels of nitric oxide in the body.

Watermelon

Watermelon is a good source of the amino acid citrulline, which has been linked to better blood flow to the penis and clitoris, increasing arousal and pleasure for both parties. In fact, watermelon’s been called “nature’s Viagra” for that reason!

Note: It’s also important to note… libido killers include stress, sugar, smoking, and excess alcohol. So kick the sugar, cigs, and booze, take some deep breaths, and add some libido-boosting foods to your diet… then, bow-chicka-wow-wow!
